SaskPower & SAASE fuel the CLEAN TEAM in Yorkton

A SaskPower CLEAN TEAM will be keeping the grounds clean again this year at the Yorkton Summer Fair, thanks to an ongoing partnership between SaskPower and the Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions (SAASE).

Wearing CLEAN TEAM t-shirts, youth teams from Yorkton will collect and recycle waste materials on fair grounds during the annual exhibition. Using refuse and recycle bins provided by SaskPower, this recycling effort will help ease pressure at the local landfill, while the recycling revenues will go to participating local non-profit groups.

“The partnership with SAASE and the Yorkton exhibition – now in its third year – reflects SaskPower’s response to the critical challenge of balancing environmental concerns with Saskatchewan’s growing electricity needs,” says Rick Patrick, Vice-President, Planning, Environment Regulatory Affairs, SaskPower.

Last year, the CLEAN TEAM in Yorkton collected 1,000 bags of garbage and 300 bags of recyclable material. Across the province, 8,290 bags of trash were collected, as well as 853 bags of recyclables.

“This partnership with SaskPower helps SAASE fulfill its mandate to make a difference to the environment,” says Glen Duck, vice president, SAASE. “Working with local youth groups across the province to recycle the garbage at regional fairs will have a huge impact on decreasing the pressure on local landfills.”

Thanks to the partnership, 225 garbage barrels and 100 recycle bins are in use at exhibition facilities around Saskatchewan throughout the year, and are being used for other events. Participating fairs include Battlefords, Nipawin, Melville, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Moose Jaw Current, Melfort and Estevan. SaskPower is also providing an annual honourarium to all regional fairs participating in the CLEAN TEAM project that in turn helps local community groups.
