Job Interview Tips
Preparing for the interview
You've gotten your foot in the door with an impressive resume and now comes the all important interview, the time when you show us that you have the skills necessary to do the job.
Be prepared to speak knowledgeably about SaskPower and how you will contribute to our ongoing success. It's a good idea to learn about our company and about our customers. Most of this information is readily available on our website.
At the interview, we'll be exploring your knowledge, skills and abilities. Read the job description and determine the qualities that we're looking for, then prepare two or three examples that show that you've done these types of duties before. We'll ask you to recall specific past experiences that can be drawn from all aspects of your life: including work, school, your time on a sports team, or volunteer activities.
Be on time for your interview, dress appropriately, and avoid wearing perfumes and colognes (as many people have allergies).
During the interview
Treat the interview like a good conversation, where you maintain eye contact and are conscious of your body language. Here are more helpful tips:
- Take your time: After you hear a question, take 10 or 20 seconds to think of the best example you can provide to demonstrate you have the necessary skills. If you have not heard the question clearly, it's okay to have it repeated, but never buy time by asking the interviewer to repeat each question.
- Stick to 5 basics: When did the situation occur? Who was involved? What happened? Where did it happen? How did it turn out?
- Focus on your skills: There are no trick questions. We ask a question because we want you to tell us about specific skills you have that are important to the position.
- Be specific: If you're asked to provide a specific example, then provide a specific example. Avoid phrases such as "I believe", "I think" or "I suppose", unless the interviewer asks for your opinion. Then it's okay to philosophize.
- Avoid the oversell: Be straight-forward and provide details but don't use each question as an opportunity to tell us why you should be selected. Your specific examples will demonstrate to us whether you have the required skills.
- One answer per question please: Stick to one specific example. If additional information is required, the interviewer will probe for more detail or ask you to provide another example.
- At the end of the interview, we may ask if you have any questions. It's always a good idea to ask about the next step in the process. And be sure to thank people for their time!
