The benefits of near-zero emissions clean coal technology include:

  • Significantly reducing the release of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants.
  • Creating effective and affordable technology that can be transferred to both the developed and developing dependence on coal for electric power. Current dependence is high. For example, China: 81%, India: 75% and the United States: 57%.
  • Safely recycling a harmful by-product of coal combustion - CO2 - for use in enhanced oil recovery.
  • Positioning SaskPower and Canada as a world leader in the development and use of clean coal technologies.
  • Maintaining access to an affordable, reliable and secure form of electrical generation.
  • Strengthening Saskatchewan's, Canada's and the world's energy-based economies.
  • Allowing SaskPower to cost-effectively meet future baseload generating requirements arising out of anticipated growth and aging facilities. Existing facilities were constructed in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
  • Enabling SaskPower and other utilities to prepare to meet or better emerging regulatory requirements.
