We’ve committed to add 60 MW of solar power by 2021 — that’s roughly enough clean electricity to power between 10,000 and 12,000 homes. Our first 10 MW utility-scale solar project is in motion; we expect it to be in service as early as 2019.
Our plans to bring solar to Saskatchewan include opportunities for independent power producers, partnerships with First Nations Power Authority and community driven projects.
Why we’re doing it
Adding solar is not just about meeting Saskatchewan's growing power needs — it will also help us meet our goal of having 50 per cent of our generation capacity come from renewable sources by 2030. This goal is part of our plans to reduce emissions by about 40 per cent within that same timeframe.
Our progress so far
The process began in September 2016 with a Request for Qualification (RFQ) to independent power producers. We are currently in the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage and will select a qualified solar project developer later in 2017. Supporting and encouraging local participation from qualified vendors and suppliers is part of our RFP process.
Minimizing the impact to you
We don’t expect any significant impact to customers such as long-term traffic problems or outages while the solar project is being constructed.
Respecting the local environment
The project site has not yet been selected, however, environmental concerns are a big part of the process. This includes avoiding environmentally sensitive land and minimizing or mitigating any impact to native habitats.
More benefits to your community
This project could generate construction and material supply opportunities for local vendors. The chosen developer will manage and operate the facility through an agreement with SaskPower; we will purchase the generated power and deliver it to our customers.
Keeping you informed
SaskPower engages with local municipalities, community representatives, affected landowners and many other stakeholders before selecting or suggesting an appropriate location to build the project. We’ll provide more information here as it becomes available.
