Island Falls

2005 marks the 75th anniversary of the Island Falls Hydroelectric Station, Saskatchewan's oldest hydro generation facility.

Island Falls is located on the Churchill River near the Manitoba border, and draws water from the expansive Churchill River Basin. The Cree name for the Churchill River is Missinipe, meaning Great Water.

The station was named Island Falls because of three low waterfalls in the area, which were completely submerged when the forebay of the dam was filled in 1930.

Construction of the Island Falls Hydroelectric Station began in 1929, managed by the Churchill River Power Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company (HBM&S).
