The 115 kV Athabasca Hydro Tranmsission Line spans 355 kilometres of rock, trees and tundra to connect three small hydro stations near Uranium City with the uranium mine at Rabbit Lake. In addition to serving the mine, the line also brings hydro power to several northern communities that had relied on diesel generators, which are much more expensive to operate. Because of the line's remote and rugged location, large helicopters had to be used to install towers for a third of the route along the north side of Lake Athabasca. Even in some areas where conventional construction methods were used, work crews had to be flown in and out by helicopter, float or ski plane.
