Opportunities

HandshakeLarge-scale or small-scale, this is what you need to know to produce your own power, sell power to SaskPower, or transport electricity out of the province.

The sale of electricity in Saskatchewan is governed by The Power Corporation Act in which SaskPower has been granted the exclusive right to distribute electrical generation within the province. It requires us to set standards, guidelines, and rules for facilities interconnected with our electrical distribution system. There is no prohibition against self-generation, but independent power producers are not permitted to sell electricity to third parties. However, independent power producers within Saskatchewan have the ability to transport electricity to our two wholesale customers, the cities of Saskatoon and Swift Current, and to transport electricity out of the province, through SaskPower’s Open Access Transmission Tariff (OATT).

Do you want to produce your own power?
For customers, large and small, wanting to generate electricity to offset power purchased from us, we have policies and guidelines for you to follow. These guidelines outline interconnection requirements ensuring that safety, power quality, and system security concerns are addressed. Should you produce more power than you can use, we will also purchase that excess.

Larger additions to our generation supply will also be considered. We believe that some electricity supply options are best developed by independent power producers, with SaskPower buying the electricity produced through a power purchase agreement. We are already doing this with the Meridian Cogeneration Station, Cory Cogeneration Station, SunBridge Wind Power Project and the Environmentally Preferred Power (EPP) projects that are underway. All viable options will be evaluated in terms of need and economic opportunity.
