Distributed Generation

Biogas
SaskPower entered a partnership with Clear-Green Environmental Inc. to demonstrate technology that uses animal manure to generate heat and electricity, and test its viability as part of SaskPower’s distributed generation initiatives.

Biogas was produced at a hog facility near Cudworth, Saskatchewan using a digester process which relied on bacteria to break down the manure in a large enclosed tank. The biogas, which is predominantly methane, was drawn off and piped into four 30-kW microturbines.

Results indicated reliability issues with generating equipment. The equipment has now been decommissioned and results of the pilot are being reviewed and a report prepared.
