SaskPower's distributed generation pilot program was initiated to determine the potential advantages of innovative and sustainable technologies. Distributed generation is the application of small generators - typically several hundred kilowatts in size - at a consumer's site rather than large centralized power stations. Energy available at the site is used to produce electricity, which can be used either at the site or fed into the electrical grid. Advantages include reduced line losses, local fuel resource and waste heat utilization, and greenhouse gas emission credits.
SaskPower is investigating the opportunity of pursuing distributed generation services in Saskatchewan by developing five pilot projects. The projects we've identified as good candidates designed to test various applications, business opportunity, economic benefit, technologies, environmental impact, customer value and business models include photovoltaic (solar), wood gasification, flare gas, cogeneration and biogas.
