Forest Carbon Reserve

Using forests to store carbon
In 1999, SaskPower agreed to invest $6 million in a carbon sequestration project in northern Saskatchewan, with two components:

protecting a section of forest in northern Saskatchewan from being harvested

replanting approximately 5 million seedlings in another section of previously harvested forest (to bring the once-harvested forests up to their maximum capacity.)

The planting was coordinated by Saskatchewan Environment, as part of the partnership.

This project – which will secure 22 million tonnes of offsets when complete – is the first Canadian forest sequestration project to undergo a rigorous review, ensuring that the emission reductions are real and properly quantified. The review was led by the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Trading Pilot, a government, industry and advocacy group studying emission reduction credit trading.

Until commercially viable technology is developed, SaskPower will use offsets to preserve the integrity of the environment, while continuing to provide Saskatchewan residents with a safe, reliable, and cost-effective source of electricity.
