Framework for Environmental Performance

Environmental management system (EMS)

Electricity powers our way of life — our homes, schools and businesses — but it also has an impact on our environment.
It is up to industry, governments, communities and consumers to work together to develop solutions.

In October 2000, SaskPower became the first full-service (generation, transmission and distribution) electric utility in Canada to achieve corporate-wide ISO 14001 registration. At SaskPower, our ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS) is our framework for excellence in environmental performance.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is a rigorous global standard of excellence that focuses on three key commitments:

Compliance with relevant environmental legislation, regulations and corporate environmental commitments.

Prevention of pollution.

Continual improvement of environmental management systems and environmental performance.

In order to meet these commitments, SaskPower has a comprehensive environmental awareness training program to help ensure that all employees and contractors understand their roles, responsibilities and our EMS.

Our EMS provides us with an effective tool for identifying, monitoring and managing the impact of our business on air quality and on land, water and wildlife habitat.

We track our progress toward improved environmental performance by setting specific objectives and targets that are based on regulatory, technological and financial considerations as well as the views of customers, communities and environmental agencies.
