Old Man on His Back prairie and heritage conservation
area
SaskPower is proud of our partnership with the Nature
Conservancy of Canada to conserve more than 5,300 hectares of native
prairie grassland in southwestern Saskatchewan called the Old Man on
His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area.
This area of the Cypress Uplands is one of the best remaining examples of native prairie in the province and is home to several species-at-risk, including the Burrowing Owl, the Swift Fox and Ferruginous Hawk. The area also has significant heritage value, containing medicine wheels and teepee rings and other First Nations artifacts.
Grasslands and forests that are kept in a natural state capture carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it in the soil.
As part of our habitat offset program, SaskPower is able to continue generating and transmitting electricity while ensuring critical wildlife and habitats are protected for generations to come.
