Solar panel project
The Quill Lakes area, located in east-central Saskatchewan, is one of
the continent's most important inland water bodies for migratory birds.
The area provides habitat for endangered and uncommon species like the
peregrine falcon, ferruginous hawk, Baird's sparrow and whooping crane.
It is particularly important as a stopover and nesting site for the endangered
piping plover.
When granted Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network status in 1994,
a habitat development project was initiated for the Quill Lakes area. SaskPower
contributes solar-powered water pumps to four rangeland pastures every
summer, which allow shoreline habitat to be fenced apart from neighbouring
cattle. This has proven critical to the project's success.
SaskPower also reduced the possibility of birds striking power lines by not building distribution lines from the main SaskPower electrical grid.
