Solar Energy
A photovoltaic array was installed at the
Saskatchewan Science Centre in 2001 to test the economics of solar-sourced
electricity generation. Data
collected shows that this technology is site specific, depending on the
availability of sunlight. As a result, this technology is better
suited for niche applications where connection to the grid is uneconomical
or when passive solar enhancement is desired. The cost savings resulting
from the solar system cannot effectively offset the capital costs for
installation. For the purpose of scientific demonstration, this project
will continue operation.
Inside the Science Centre is an interactive exhibit. The Sunshine
Heights display demonstrates how much energy is currently being produced
by the solar panels and indicates how much energy is required to operate
typical electrical appliances and devices.
#1 Sunshine Lane exhibit
offers an explanation of how solar energy works and its limitations. It
shows how electrical devices within a model of a house are affected by
the impact of sun and cloud on power being generated by solar panels on
the model’s roof.
