Waste management
Zero G stands for Zero Garbage, and zero garbage is our goal. SaskPower initiated the Zero G Waste Management Program in 1993.We carry out the five R's of waste management (rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover). Our employees have recycled several thousand tonnes of paper and other waste products since the introduction of Zero G, resulting in less waste material sent to landfills across the province.
Each year, summer students conduct audits of waste streams at approximately 60 SaskPower facilities so we can track our progress. We've implemented several new recycling programs as a result of the audit process, including aerosol cans, oily rags, antifreeze, milk cartons and organic material.
Our recycling efforts also extend to the efficient use of other materials. In the construction and rebuilding of transmission lines, for example, we tender scrap metals for reuse and recycling.
In addition to reducing our volume of waste material, Zero G is an important educational tool for our employees.
