Poplar River – Pasqua 230kV Transmission Line Project
Project Overview for Poplar River – Pasqua 230kV Transmission Line
A new 230 kV transmission line is needed between the Poplar River Power Station near Coronach and the Pasqua Switching Station east of Moose Jaw. The capital cost is estimated at approximately $60 million. SaskPower expects to recover these costs in approximately five years.
Project Need
Saskatchewan needs this new 230 kV transmission line for several reasons:
- The existing transmission system needs reinforcement to meet new reliability standards from the North American Reliability Council (NERC). SaskPower is adopting these standards to meet good utility practises for reliable operation of Saskatchewan’s bulk power system and our interconnections with neighbouring utilities in Alberta, Manitoba, and North Dakota.
- A new line will deliver additional power from the Poplar River Power Station, which will produce an additional 20 megawatts (MW) of power when a refurbishment is complete by the end of 2008.
- A new line will lower SaskPower’s operating costs by reducing transmission losses.
