Provincial Transmission System
SaskPower maintains more than 12,212 kilometres of transmission lines. Transmission lines are designed to carry electricity over long distances, and operate at 72 kilovolts (72 kV), 138 kV and 230 kV. This extensive network is designed to serve Saskatchewan's large geographic area and widely dispersed population safely and reliably, while allowing for the import of power if needed, as well as the export and sale of surplus generation when possible.
Provincial Distribution System
SaskPower maintains more than 142,843 km of distribution lines. Distribution
lines normally operate at 25 kilovolts (25 kV) or below. With Saskatchewan's
large rural population, SaskPower supplies about three customers per
circuit kilometre, while most utilities in North American average about
12 customers over the same distance.

Future Transmission Line Development
New investment
in a safe, reliable, and high-quality transmission system will play a
critical role in the province’s future. SaskPower will
communicate on an ongoing basis to stakeholders its long-term forecasting
of load growth that assesses system reliability, identifies potential
future need and potential deficiencies, and outline our general plans
for improvement, reinforcement and rebuilding of the provincial electrical
system.
Building new transmission lines where needed, along with rebuilding or upgrading existing lines, helps SaskPower to meet growing demand, enhance system reliability, reduce line losses which reduces operating costs, and support SaskPower’s compliance with North American regulatory standards.
