How does it work?
Hydropower converts the natural flow of water into electricity. It works
by capturing water as it flows and falls from a height. The energy is produced
by the falling water turning the blades of a water turbine, which in turn
drives a generator to produce electricity.
What is its potential as a supply option in SaskPower’s
system?
There are a number of potential large hydro sites on the Saskatchewan
and Churchill river systems
There are low greenhouse gas emissions.
Renewable.
Relatively low “fuel” costs with the use of water.
Northern Saskatchewan locations leads to the potential employment of northern residents.
Potential for additional recreational opportunities on reservoirs
It will take time to obtain the necessary social licenses to build; can alter traditional lifestyles.
Due to climate change there is a risk of possible future impacts on river flows , which will make uncertain the quantity and timing of flows.
Fish management issues exist due to habitat alterations affecting fish and other riverbank species.
The potential northern location of a large hydro project is relatively far from consumer centres, which increases the cost because of a need for extra transmission lines.
