How will we close the power supply gap?
Everything we know tells us Saskatchewan’s demand for electricity will continue to rise. We also know that beginning in 2010, we will have to start retiring or refurbishing some of our power generation assets due to aging infrastructure and anticipated future environmental regulations.
What are our plans?
Our short-term strategy is to ensure that all of Saskatchewan's new electricity needs until 2010 are met from environmentally friendly sources whose operations do not add to greenhouse gas emissions. We call this our Green Power Portfolio.
Our Green Power Portfolio consists of the 150 MW Centennial Wind Power Facility, 45 MW Environmentally Preferred Power (EPP) solicitation, and energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.
In addition, unsolicited proposals will be considered as needed provided
the technology is emissions-free.
In the medium term (2010-2014), SaskPower will undertake a number of initiatives.
To position the electrical grid for additional wind, biomass and other renewable generation projects, SaskPower will install up to 400 megawatts of simple cycle natural gas turbines.
SaskPower will also expand the Green Power Portfolio to include an ambitious Demand Side Management Program and a number of other sustainable and renewable initiatives.

In the long-term (beyond 2014), SaskPower plans to refurbish or retire a substantial portion of its remaining fleet. Timely decisions will be made on new supplies to fill the gap created by unit retirements from a list of possible options including clean coal, integrated gasification combined cycle (coal or other fuels), natural gas combined cycle, polygeneration, sustainable electricity purchased from independent power producers, large scale hydro, nuclear, and imports.
Future Power Supply
How will we choose what will power our future? And what exactly are our
options?
