The Power Supply Gap

Our power generation assets are aging. Some of them are approaching the end of their technical, economic, and environmentally acceptable lives.

As a result, beginning as early as 2010 we will have to start retiring or refurbishing some of these assets. As well, everything we know tells us Saskatchewan’s demand for electricity will continue to rise.

These two factors will create a power supply gap – the gap between what we are obligated to deliver to our customers and what we are capable of delivering. Given these realities, we must start thinking now about the gap that we see ahead, and how we can fill it.

Many tough decisions face us as we anticipate more stringent environmental regulations in the future. This is a huge challenge, but it also presents an exciting opportunity for SaskPower to replace aging facilities with cleaner ways to generate power.
