Wind Power

How does it work?
Wind moving across the blades of a wind turbine causes a pressure differential which causes the blades to move. The blades turn a gear box which is connected to a generator. The electricity from each wind turbine is collected on a distribution feeder line tied into a local transmission line.

What is its potential as a supply option in SaskPower’s system?
Saskatchewan can potentially accommodate additional wind generation.

Advantages

Renewable.

Zero emissions of greenhouse gases.

Disadvantages

The variable output creates system operational issues, which can be managed, but at an increased cost.

Potential mortality of birds and bats.

Noise and aesthetics are concerns.
