To allow a safe distance for typical activities, use the following minimum clearances when locating buildings, storage areas and other installations near pad-mounted transformers and overhead power lines.

Horizontal distance to pad-mounted transformers Horizontal distance to overhead high-voltage power and buried high-voltage cable lines
Bales, haystacks and feedlots 6 metres (20 feet) to transformer 15 metres (50 feet)
Fuel tanks 7.5 metres (25 feet) to transformer 1.5m to buried high voltage cable 7.5 metres (25 feet)
Granaries 6 metres (20 feet) to transformer 0.6m to buried high voltage cable 15 metres (50 feet)
Homes 6 metres (20 feet) to transformer 0.6m to buried high voltage cable 15 metres (50 feet)
Barns, sheds, quonsets and garages 6 metres (20 feet) to transformer 0.6m to buried high voltage cable 15 metres (50 feet)
Water wells 1.5 metres (5 feet) to transformer 1.5m to buried high voltage cable 15 metres (50 feet)
Antennas 3 metres (10 feet) to transformer 0.6m to buried high voltage cable Height of the antenna + 3 metres (10 feet)

Concerned that your buildings, storage areas and other installations don't meet minimum clearances? Call us at 1-888-757-6937. These clearances are conservative and we'll evaluate the particular circumstances of your installation to determine if there are any concerns.

Tips to keep you safe while working around electricity

  • Install yard lights below the lowest voltage service, but never directly beneath the transformer.
  • Take care to avoid damage to ground wires and rods.
  • Report damaged ground wires and rods to SaskPower immediately by calling 1-888-757-6937 or report damage to SaskPower property by using our online form.
  • Use extreme caution in towing raised cultivators, grain augers and other tall equipment before going under power lines.
  • Point your grain-bin doors away from power lines. Do not locate bins on both sides of a high-voltage power line.
  • Locate underground power lines before you dig.
