SaskPower Gas Inspections oversees all consumer, commercial, and industrial gas installations in Saskatchewan. Our mandate is to ensure that gas installations are performed safely as required by
The Gas Inspection Act 1993 and Regulations.

Red Tag program

SaskPower Gas Inspections assists licensed gas contractors and consumers with identifying and correcting hazardous conditions related to gas-fired equipment. If a gas contractor finds a safety issue the equipment will be “red tagged”. If the situation is immediately hazardous, both the equipment and the gas supply to it will be shut off. The red tag is then turned over to SaskPower Gas Inspections for follow up.

This program defines low risk and immediately hazardous conditions for the contractor. Immediately hazardous conditions include situations with:

elevated levels of carbon monoxide,
natural gas or propane leaks,
and where the equipment is operating at an abnormally high temperature.

In all cases, a licensed gas contactor is required by law to complete any repairs to gas-fired equipment. We recommend that for larger jobs you get two or three quotes and ask questions.

Working with the Mechanical Contractors Association

The Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan Inc. (MCA) is a trade association for contractors and suppliers of the plumbing, heating, and mechanical industry.

The cooperation between premise owners, your licensed gas contractor, and SaskPower Gas Inspections will keep your gas-fired equipment in better working condition and keep you and your family safe.

Before you hire a gas contractor, refer to these tips from MCA:

Make sure the contractor is a licensed gas contractor and the technician is a qualified gas fitter by asking to see the gas fitter’s ticket before work begins;
Find out if the work is covered by a warranty or maintenance contract before hiring a contractor;
Ask your neighbours, family, and friends for recommendations;
Ask for references and check them;
Obtain three written estimates of any work necessary, as well as written confirmation whether or not subcontractors will be involved;
Be wary of any contractor offering a special deal over the telephone or at your door;
