Avoid counterfeit appliances and stay safe

Due to an increasing number of counterfeit appliances entering the Canadian market, SaskPower’s Gas & Electrical Inspections department urges consumers to be cautious when purchasing new appliances.

Counterfeit appliances look identical to certified household or commercial appliances but pose serious risks for users because they don’t meet national safety standards.

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) advises consumers to check for the following signs of counterfeit when purchasing a new appliance:

  1. If the price seems too good to be true, it likely is. A great bargain is not worth risking the safety of your family.
  2. Spelling errors in packaging.
  3. Flimsy construction.
  4. Certification marks on the packaging but not on the product.

If you find a counterfeit appliance, stop using it immediately and alert the retail outlet where it was purchased.
