SaskPower has developed a Demand Response program as a cost-effective option to supplement the province's electricity system. Demand response is used when the province is experiencing high electricity demand, at times of system constraint, or when it provides an economic benefit for SaskPower.
Through the program, we pay our largest industrial customers to reduce or shift their electricity use.
Why demand response?
The Demand Response program is one of the ways we are meeting the growing need for electricity in Saskatchewan in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible way.
The program provides SaskPower with a list of customers that can be called upon to reduce or shift their electrical use. This allows us to be more responsive to peak demands so that power is there when you need it. Any customer that meets the program criteria can participate, and in return for shifting or reducing their power consumption, each customer receives financial compensation.
Another benefit of the program is the cost savings resulting from deferral of the construction of new power stations and associated transmission lines.
Program criteria
Large industrial customers that are able to reduce their electricity load by a minimum of five megawatts (MW) per event from a single location are eligible for this program.
