Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use up to 75 per cent less electricity than incandescent light bulbs and last 10 times longer. Switching to CFLs is one of the easiest and best ways to save money on your power bill.
There are some common misconceptions out there, so here's the truth about CFLs:
- CFLs save you money. Each CFL bulb can save you about $40 over its lifetime
- CFLS can be used indoors and outdoors. Use enclosed fixtures outdoors for best results. Most CFLs have been designed for a minimum optimal operating temperature of -18C but will operate at lower temperatures. When temperatures drop below this point, the life of the bulb may be affected—it may also take longer for the bulb to reach full brightness
- There is a CFL for nearly every fixture and use
- CFLs are as bright as incandescent light bulbs. Check out the CFL Buying Guide for more information
- CFLs are safe. They are not a fire hazard. For the safest CFLs, choose ones that are certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or Underwriters' Laboratories (UL)
- CFLs come in a variety of colours
- Dimmer and tri-light fixtures need special CFL bulbs! There are also CFLs available for motion sensors, photocells, torchiere floor lamps and enclosed fixtures
- Always make sure your CFL bulb is appropriate for the light fixture and usage. Improper usage may result in the CFL burning out early, changing colour or charring around the base
- CFLs can be used in any fixture
