Sustainable Growth

SaskPower works with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and Saskatchewan Watershed Authority to investigate and mitigate fish and habitat issues resulting from the operation of the E.B. Campbell Hydroelectric Station. In 2009, we completed a five-year long aquatic assessment project that looked at the fish habitat downstream of our generating station. Based on the project data, we are finalizing recommendations to improve downstream fish habitat. A separate project assessing the impact of operations in fish stranding and mortality below the E.B. Campbell Hydroelectric Station was completed in 2010. Recommendations and measures from both projects will be implemented in 2011.

Fisheries Issues Committee

In order to identify and resolve fish and fish habitat issues at our facilities, we are part of a committee that includes Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and Saskatchewan Watershed Authority. This committee takes into account mandates for water, fisheries, fish and fish habitat, and allows us to balance power generation with environmental and economic factors.

The committee's 2011–2013 Action Plan focuses on information gathering. Of interest to the committee are issues specific to electricity generation facilities. Information gathered will empower the committee to make the best possible decisions.
