Sustainable Growth

An invasive species is any species that has been introduced to an environment where it is not native, and that has since become a nuisance through rapid spread and increase in numbers, often to the detriment of native species.

Zebra mussels

We are currently monitoring zebra mussels, an invasive species from the United States that has no natural predators. Zebra mussels can clog water intakes at coal and hydroelectric facilities, as well as damage existing ecosystems.

Education, awareness and monitoring

Education, awareness and monitoring are critical to preventing zebra mussels from entering and spreading throughout Saskatchewan. SaskPower, the Ministry of the Environment and the Saskatchewan Invasive Species Council work together to increase awareness and monitoring activities.

What you can do

  • Drain all water from your boat, live well, bilge and bait buckets before you leave the water. Once you return home, wash and rinse your boat with hot, soapy water
  • Flush your engine with hot water
  • Wash your trailer with hot, soapy water and then rinse with hot water
  • Dispose of all live bait, other than earthworms or night crawlers, in a proper disposal site before entering Saskatchewan
  • Leave your boat out in hot, dry weather for three to five days and then scrape off any remaining rough spots on the hull
  • Be sure to carry out these activities on dry land and away from any water body
  • Report any sightings of invasive species by calling 1-800-563-7711
