The Species at Risk Act (SARA) was created to prevent wildlife species from becoming extinct. The Act protects species at risk and their critical habitats. SARA also contains provisions to help manage species of special concern to prevent them from becoming endangered or extinct.
As a member of the Canadian Electricity Association, SaskPower is active in providing input into national policy development related to the implementation of SARA, as well as input into the five-year review of the legislation.
The Canadian Electricity Association has teamed up with the Canadian Hydroelectricity Association to ensure that hydroelectric generation facilities operate within current Species at Risk Act provisions.
We conduct annual piping plover surveys at Cookson Reservoir, which supplies water to the Poplar River Power Station. We also participate on the South Saskatchewan River Piping Plover Planning Committee and the Piping Plover Recovery Team, to reduce the risks to piping plovers that breed on Lake Diefenbaker.
We are proud sponsors of the Nature Saskatchewan Stewards of Saskatchewan Program, which engages rural landowners in conserving wildlife habitat for threatened and endangered species. Within this larger program, SaskPower participates in and sponsors the Plovers on Shore Program, Operation Burrowing Owl and Shrubs for Shrikes, which focuses on the endangered piping plover and burrowing owl, and the threatened loggerhead shrike.
