We monitor the development of water-related regulations at the provincial and federal levels. We also monitor surface and ground water quality in the vicinity of our facilities to better understand the impact of our operations.
Constructed wetlands
Built in 1994 near the Estevan sewage lagoons, the constructed wetland is one of the largest of its kind in Canada and is the only one in North America providing cooling water to a power station.
The wetland provides up to 40 per cent of the Shand Power Station's annual cooling water requirements. It also purifies the City of Estevan's secondary sewage wastewater, eliminating the need for semi-annual releases of Estevan's lagoons to the environment.
