Sustainable Growth

We recommend that before you request a Preliminary Interconnection Study, you consider the cost of setting up a renewable generation system before you generate your own power.

Download the Net Metering checklist and the Net Metering 10-step process, which you can use to ensure the process goes as smoothly and as quickly as possible.

Complete and send the application for the Preliminary Interconnection Study

Download an application - Request for Preliminary Interconnection Study for Net Metering

The return address is on the form. Only properly and fully completed applications that are accompanied with the appropriate payment will be processed. Please keep a copy of all information you submit to SaskPower for your records.

Sample completed applications

You will also have to include the following diagrams with your application

  • General site drawing and map for generation system
  • Equipment line diagram completed by an electrician, of all generation equipment, inverters, utility disconnect switch, panel (sub panel), main breaker connection, and meter
  • Specification sheets from your supplier on the generation equipment and inverters and any other non-standard equipment. The inverter must meet Canadian Standards Association and Underwriters Laboratories certification

We send you a letter of quote and Interconnection Agreement

After we receive the completed Request for Preliminary Interconnection Study for net metering with payment and associated diagrams, we send you a letter of quote and an Interconnection Agreement for net metering. The quote will include the total costs associated with connection, commissioning and the bi-directional meter. Review this with your local SaskPower business office to ensure proper understanding of the costs involved. We also recommend you review the Net Metering Policy.

You sign the letter of quote and Interconnection Agreement

If you agree with the quote and the Interconnection Agreement, sign them both and send one copy of the agreement to the regional business office that sent you your letter of quote, along with the payment indicated in the quote, and keep a copy of the agreement (along with the letter of quote) for your records.

Install the generation technology

Finalize the power generation technology you want to purchase from your supplier and arrange for the system to be installed on your property. If you change the technology or equipment from what you submitted, you will have to submit a second Preliminary Interconnection Study application.

Your electrical contractor should commission your system and ensure it is working properly.

Electrical contractor applies for an electrical permit on your behalf

Your contractor will obtain the electrical permit on your behalf. Inspections take place a minimum of two weeks after the permit is obtained.

An inspection will be performed once the system is installed and verified by the supplier that it is working correctly. The contractor, installer and inspector must be on-site together during the inspection.

We install a bi-directional meter

The bi-directional meter will be installed by a SaskPower Metering Services technician.

Application process time

This process can take from two to six months. Use the Net Metering checklist and the Net Metering 10-step process to avoid unnecessary delays.
