Benefits of coal Concerns about coal
  • 300-year supply in Saskatchewan
  • Reliable fuel source
  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Non-renewable fuel source

Coal-fired power plants represent the primary source of energy in Saskatchewan. There is an abundant fuel supply and the power plants are operating reliably. However, adding another coal-fired power plant in Saskatchewan would significantly increase carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and we're committed to lowering CO2 emissions.

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, we're currently testing Carbon Capture technology. This technology captures the emissions, liquefies them and stores the liquid underground. The liquid CO2 is then used to increase the output of low-producing oil extraction sites. This technology is designed to reduce CO2 emissions to comply with future clean air regulations.

Coal is the fuel source for 50 percent of the world's energy supply. The potential global impact of Carbon Capture is considerable and SaskPower has taken a leadership position in the development of this technology.
