Sustainable Growth

Benefits of importing Concerns about importing
  • Low greenhouse gas emissions
  • Proven technology
  • No sulphur dioxide or nitrogen oxides emissions
  • Reliable
  • Renewable
  • Cost is variable
  • Hydro dependent on water levels
  • Non-Saskatchewan source
  • Additional transmission required

We have ongoing discussions with Manitoba Hydro regarding energy transactions. These have resulted in transmission service studies being initiated to examine the transmission requirements to import energy from Manitoba.

Presently, there is an agreement in place for Manitoba Hydro to transport generation from a point near the SaskPower Island Falls Hydroelectric Station to the southern Saskatchewan border. SaskPower and Manitoba Hydro also have an Emergency Energy Agreement in place.

The advantages and disadvantages of importing power are based on purchasing power from a hydro generating facility.
