Our Future Power Plan was created to ensure that the province of Saskatchewan has enough reliable, sustainable and affordable energy to meet its energy demands into the future. The planning process began by examining the power requirements of our current and future customers.
1. Figure out the electricity needs of the province
SaskPower created a forecast of Saskatchewan's energy needs from now until beyond 2022. This forecast was based on a variety of factors, such as historical energy needs, business activity, population projections and other social influences, even the weather. It also includes an estimate of how much demand would be reduced through conservation programs.
SaskPower believes the electrical demand beyond 2023 will be approximately 4100 Megawatts (MW), which is more than SaskPower can currently supply.
2. Figure out how to meet or exceed the needs of the province
To meet the forecast into the future, we examined partnerships, emissions-reduction technologies, renewable fuel sources and conservation programs. Each opportunity was carefully considered and, if feasible, was included in Our Action Plan. Our Action Plan contains short-, medium- and long-term projects, programs and strategies to ensure that Saskatchewan will have reliable, sustainable and affordable electricity for years to come.
