Sustainable Growth

SaskPower is creating a supplementary water supply for the Poplar River Power Station (PRPS). Currently the cooling water for the PRPS comes from the Cookson reservoir. This supplementary water supply will provide the PRPS with cooling water in the case of a water shortage within the Cookson reservoir. In the spring of 2010, the Cookson reservoir was at 87 per cent capacity and 0.7 metres below full water supply.

The wells will not be used unless required based on reservoir capacity and water supply.

Location

SaskPower is studying an area north of the Cookson Reservoir for the water wells that will form the supplementary water supply.

The attached map indicates the approximate location of the study area. The proposed area would be in addition to the existing well fields in the Poplar River Mine West Block and the Morrison Dam Salinity Project.

In 2009, SaskPower conducted a partial exploration program starting with a series of test holes, piezometers, and test wells, in and around the area of interest. The production capability of these test wells was assessed and showed adequate potential supply. Further exploration and well installation work is planned for 2011 and 2012. SaskPower will consult further with landowners and apply for the required approvals for an expanded well field from the Ministry of the Environment. Any wells would be shut in until water levels in the Cookson reservoir become of concern, at which time pumps could be installed and the produced water would then be piped to the Cookson reservoir.
