Heating and ventilation
Doors and windows are the largest source of heat loss in a building.
Reduce heat loss by sealing any cracks and weather stripping all doors
and windows.
- During the winter, set the thermostat in your workspace to 20°C
(68°F) during work hours and to 13°C (55°F) when the space
is unoccupied. For every degree you lower in the 16°C - 21°C (60°F
- 70°F) range, you can save up to 2% on heating costs.
- Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature during
and after work hours.
- Consider a locking cover over the thermostat to avoid having employees
change temperature settings.
- Keep your exterior and freight doors closed as much as possible, to
retain heat inside the building.
- Open the window blinds and remove solar screens, blinds or awnings on
south and west facing windows to help increase heat gain during the winter.
(Remember to replace them in the summer
- Add an insulation blanket to your water heater if it is located in an
unheated space.
- Install a timer on your electric water heater and set it to run after
8 p.m. and go off before 6 a.m.
- As a minimum, insulate the first three feet of exposed pipes coming
from the water heater.
