Our small power producers policy is a response to customers who want to generate up to 100 kilowatts (kW) of electricity to offset power that would otherwise be purchased from us. The policy applies to wind and solar-powered facilities and other viable generating sources.
You may connect a generating facility up to 100 kW in size to our electricity distribution system, if standard requirements are met.
We will purchase your excess electricity based on our average variable cost of electricity from all sources. This rate is updated annually.
Your generating facility must meet requirements for safety, power quality and grid system security before it can be connected to our grid. Two-way metering is also required to measure the electricity you provide to our grid and the electricity we provide to you.
Interconnection and metering costs vary, depending on the type and size of generating facility. Operators of self-generating facilities must sign an interconnection agreement and operating agreement with us before connecting to our grid and must pay all interconnection costs, including metering.
Smaller power projects can be costly to set up and operate. If you’re considering generating your own power, we suggest you thoroughly evaluate the amount of energy you expect to produce and the economics of the project to determine your overall cost of electricity.
We monitor customer supply requirements on an ongoing basis and acquire supply over 100 kW on as needed. All viable options are considered and evaluated when major power supply additions are needed.
