We recently sat down with Donavon Nelson to talk about how we’re working with the City of Moose Jaw to repair streetlight outages. Here’s what we learned.My does there seem to be so many streetlights out throughout Moose Jaw?

1. Why does there seem to be so many streetlights out throughout Moose Jaw?

   As the days get shorter and it’s darker outside, streetlight outages are more noticeable. In Moose Jaw, there are a few areas where the outages seem more concentrated, so we’re working with the city to address these areas of concern.

2. What is SaskPower doing to address streetlight outages in Moose Jaw?

   In October, our crews conducted an evening streetlight patrol blitz across Moose Jaw and fixed burned out lights. Our crews were out again at the end of November patrolling the city to find and fix streetlights. We’ve also assigned a dedicated resource to help stay on top of further streetlight issues and are investing more than $1M on streetlights in Moose Jaw over the next two years.

3. What’s happening with the streetlights on the 9th Avenue bridge?

   The streetlights on the 9th Avenue bridge are particularly challenging for our crews to repair. The height of the bridge coupled with the height of the streetlights make them susceptible to high winds. The high winds knock out fuses and also make it unsafe for our crews to access the lights at times. Our crews have repaired the bridge lights three times this year and continue to repair them as it’s safe for them to do so.

   We are looking at converting the bridge streetlights to LED in 2018 which may help reduce the number of streetlight outages. We’re also consulting with other utility companies about their experiences and solutions working on bridges with high winds.

4. When are you going to fix the streetlights in downtown Moose Jaw?

   There is a mix of SaskPower owned and city owned streetlight in downtown Moose Jaw, so we have been working with the City of Moose Jaw to establish a lighting plan for the area. Together, we’ve selected a design and have agreed to begin work on this new design in spring 2018 as to not interfere with the busy holiday season.
