Looking for ways to save on your bill and help the environment? Take part in the savings offered through our Retail Discount Program and you can do just that. We caught up with Shawn Machmer, Program Consultant, to learn more about how to take advantage of our money-saving offers this spring.

  1. How does the Retail Discount Program work?

Our Retail Discount Program is an expanded version of our Lighting Discount Program that runs from March 30 – April 30. Last fall we added select smart home products to our list of discounted products that will make your home more efficient. You won’t have to worry about clipping coupons – these discounts are applied right at the till on select smart home products like smart thermostats, smart power bars and smart plugs in addition to our regular line up of Energy Star® rated LED bulbs, fixtures and lighting controls.

  2. Where can I get discounted products?

On our website, you’ll find a list of stores in communities across the province that are participating in our discount program.

You can also check local store flyers and look for our in-store displays to find out which products we’re discounting. In some stores, we’ll have a representative on-hand to help you choose the correct bulb and answer any of your questions around smart home product.

One more thing: when buying a bulb, Energy Star®-rated bulbs are the gold standard. Make sure you read the labels to check the colour temperature, brightness and lifespan of the bulb. The minimum lifespan of an Energy-Star rated bulb is 15,000 hours (15 years in an average SK home). Look closely at the label to ensure you are getting the right bulb for your needs.

  3. What is a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats allow you to monitor and adjust your power use from your mobile device. They also use occupancy sensors to learn your behaviour, helping you to save power and money by keeping your home a few degrees cooler while you are away and bump up the temperature a short time before you get home – all from your mobile phone or tablet.

  4. What is a smart power bar?

Did you know that 19 per cent of your home’s electricity consumption comes from electronics? “Smart” or “Intelligent” power bars are a convenient way to reduce phantom power and your overall power consumption. Leaving electronics plugged in when you aren’t using them creates phantom power. Smart power bars have “controlled” and “always on” outlets that allow you to manage your electronics. For example, you can plug your TV into the “always on” outlet. When you turn off your TV, other devices like your cable box and sound system will also turn off if they’re plugged into the “controlled” outlets.

  5. What is a smart plug?

Smart plugs are a simple-to-use device that plug into standard wall sockets. They allow you to control plugged-in devices through an app on your smart phone or tablet. Some smart plugs allow you to create simple schedules for your home's electronics to maximize energy savings. They also allow you to monitor the amount of power a device uses in an hour, a day, or even a month.

This spring’s discount program is the perfect time to try out this technology. Let us help you save!
