Natural gas provides consistent power, even when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. This makes it an important part of our plan to add more renewables to the province.
We expect another gas plant will be needed as early as 2022, so we’re starting the process to find a site now. The size of our next plant is yet to be determined. We’re reviewing options around 350 megawatts (MW), the same size as the new Chinook Power Station and are also considering options of developing a larger facility (approx. 700 MW). Like Chinook, it’s expected to be a combined cycle facility, incorporating the most efficient technology, and held to a much lower threshold for allowable emissions than other plants.
The four areas of interest currently being considered are West Sherwood, Belle Plaine, Rowatt and Moose Jaw’s Industrial Park.
