Sustainable Growth

Generate and bank excess electricity

The Net Metering Program offers customers the opportunity to generate their own power through the use of renewable energy technology.

  • If more power is produced than consumed in a billing period, the net electricity is added to the SaskPower power grid and banked for later use. Your excess power must be used during your annual billing cycle. A credit appears on your bill that reflects the net amount of electricity that has been banked
  • If less power is produced than consumed in a billing period, you are charged for the electricity provided by SaskPower, offset by the power you produced

This program does not allow any electricity to be sold back to SaskPower. If you want to produce more power than you consume and sell it to SaskPower, consider the Small Power Producers Program.

How do I apply?

SaskPower customers can apply for this program at any time. Completing the Request for Preliminary Interconnection Study for Net Metering is the first step in the Net Metering Program process. Print off the form, complete it and send it, along with your payment, to the address listed at the top of the form.

Please keep copies of all the information you send into SaskPower for your records.

Costs

Your Net Metering Program expenses include

  • Preliminary Interconnection Study – $315 (including GST)
  • Bi-directional Meter and Interconnection Cost – approximately $300 – $500 (plus GST)
    • You only pay this after receiving your quote and interconnection agreement from SaskPower
  • Electrical permit fee – Prices vary and are listed in the permit application
  • Installation and commission of the environmentally preferred electrical generation system

Loans

SaskPower offers a loan through TD Financial Services where the interest rate is subsidized by 3.5 per cent. Each Net Metering program customer can apply for this loan, to a maximum of $50,000.

Credit rates

SaskPower credits your excess power at the same rate that you purchase power. Power billing is based on kilowatt-hours (kWh). As an example, if you are purchasing power at $0.1084/kWh, then your excess power will be credited at that amount.

Periodic reviews

The Net Metering Program is reviewed annually.
