Smart Meter Safety

We want a smart meter that works – whenever, wherever and in all types of weather conditions. That's why we've gone above and beyond industry standards to create our own meter standard for Saskatchewan. It exceeds all standards in North America. Since 2017, we’ve installed more than 70,000 commercial and industrial and residential meters that meet this standard. There have been no issues with any of them.

Learning from Our Past Experiences

We’ve learned from our experience in 2014, where we experienced problems with meters of a completely different type. Since then, we’ve worked hard with vendors to develop residential meters that meet our new standard. We've also developed additional process improvements and completed thorough meter testing.

Meter Tests

We've added testing to make sure these smart meters are of quality we can stand behind. All equipment we choose is backed by solid testing, including:

  • How it works in extreme hot and cold conditions (-50 to 85 degrees Celsius)
  • How it functions in Saskatchewan weather, including rain and humidity
  • How it stops working or “fails” when exposed to more than double the voltage it’s meant to handle
  • How the meter performs when dust and contaminants get into it

Watch the video below to find out how we test our smart meters.

Third-Party Results

MET Labs is a North American global service leader for product safety approvals and regulatory certification of electrical products. They’ve tested and reviewed our meters to ensure they’re safe for you.

The smart meters tested for the residential pilot passed 100% of all tests we put them through. The Sensus Stratus IQ Electricity Meter for successfully passed all SaskPower’s full testing program. The tests included:

  • Physical stress testing
  • Environmental testing
  • Meter specification testing
  • Radiofrequency (RF) emissions testing
  • Neutral third-party testing
  • Verification of our testing

No inconsistencies were identified. In most cases our meter not only met our industry leading standard, but also exceeded it!

Our Own Results

We’ve also put the meters through our own quality and safety tests at our Metering Operations Test Lab. As with the third-party testing, our own tests met or exceeded the standard. Review the test summaries below.
