SaskPower Receives Gold Certification for Progressive Aboriginal Relations

September 08, 2017

The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business has certified SaskPower with Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Gold status, recognizing that SaskPower is a good business partner, a great place to work and is committed to prosperity in Aboriginal communities.

"Receiving this certification is a reflection of our commitment to a strong and collaborative relationship with Saskatchewan's Aboriginal businesses and communities," said SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh. "I am proud of the work that has gone into building these relationships and I look forward to our continued engagement."

In 2014, SaskPower made its first attempt to certify as a PAR company and was awarded the Silver designation. After re-certifying this year, which is required every three years, SaskPower achieved Gold status. The certification provides a high level of assurance to communities because it is supported by independent, qualified third parties. Qualified PAR reviewers analyze company reports and confirm performance and outcomes through on-site visits, and interviews with Aboriginal stakeholders. The designation is made by a jury of Aboriginal business people.

SaskPower was evaluated on its performance in four key areas: Aboriginal business development, employment, community engagement, and community investment. SaskPower has made great strides in bringing new Aboriginal businesses into our supply chain. Spending on Aboriginal procurement has increased from $25 million in 2015 to $56 million in 2016-17. This represents nearly 8 per cent of all Saskatchewan procurement at SaskPower.

Gold status was awarded to only one other Canadian company in 2017. In total, there are 17 Gold-certified companies across the country.
