In Saskatchewan, we use the most power on the hottest and coldest days of the year, especially in the evenings between 5 and 9 pm. This is when we’re at home cooking, cleaning and cooling or heating our homes. With just 5 simple energy efficiency tips, you could save over $200 a year on your power bills. Start saving this summer!

  • Adjust your thermostat by 2 degrees
    • Changing the temperature of your home by a few degrees can make a big difference. Turning up the temperature on your thermostat by two degrees Celsius for an 8-hour period could save you up to $55 a year on annual cooling costs.
  • Hang dry your laundry
    • Hang drying 2 loads of laundry a week instead of using your clothes dryer can save you over $100 a year in power costs. Not only will you save money, but hang drying is gentler on your clothes, helping them keep their shape and last longer.
  • Use a power bar and unplug electronics
    • Use a power bar to manage your entertainment, computer and gaming devices. Using a power bar or simply unplugging electronics not in use can save you up to $50 a year. This is an easy way to reduce energy costs without having to spend money on new gadgets.
  • Close your blinds
    • During the day, block out the sun with blinds to reduce heat from entering your home and save up to 30% on your cooling costs. At night, open your windows to let the cooler evening air in. Doing these simple things can improve your home’s comfort and save you money.
  • Rotate your ceiling fan counterclockwise
    • Setting your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise creates a cooling breeze that can help save on cooling costs. This small change can help you save on your bill by reducing the need for extra cooling.
