We’re building a 350 megawatt (MW) combined cycle natural gas facility in Swift Current, which will generate enough electricity to power 350,000 homes. Combined cycle gas turbine technology is proven and highly efficient, while offering strong greenhouse gas emissions performance among thermal facilities. We expect the station to be in service by October 2019.
Why we’re doing it
Building this power station will help us meet the growing demand for power in Saskatchewan. It will support the integration of intermittent renewable generation (wind and solar), and will provide replacement power for the retirement and/or refurbishment of conventional coal-fired generating units.
Our progress so far
We’re almost done! And we continue to be on-time and on-budget.
As of August 2019, we started up the gas turbine. Since then, we've performed steam blows to clear out debris from our steam lines. To date, we’ve put in more than 2 million hours of construction since we started in January 2017.
We expect Chinook to come online late 2019 at a cost of $680 million. Check out our Construction Progress for photos and highlights.
Minimizing the impact to you
We don’t expect any significant impact to customers, such as long-term traffic restrictions or outages. Customers may experience heavier traffic in the area as workers access the construction site.
Respecting the local environment
The Chinook Power Station Project was reviewed by the provincial and federal governments and cleared all necessary environmental approvals. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment-Environmental Assessment and Stewardship Branch (MOE) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) performed environmental screening of the project.
More benefits to your community
Building the facility will create jobs — up to 650 during the construction process with an estimated 24 workers to run the facility going forward. Adding new infrastructure should also result in improved power reliability in the Swift Current area.
