We’re upgrading the Shand Greenhouse to give it many more years of growing seasons!

The current facility is nearing the end of its operational life. We’re planning to renew the entire facility and all building systems, which will expand operations and allow us to grow even more seedlings in future years.

Why is Shand Greenhouse Important?

Shand Greenhouse is a valuable asset for SaskPower. Since it opened in 1991, Shand Greenhouse has distributed around 16 million seedlings free of charge to communities around the province!

The greenhouse also demonstrates our commitment to the environment, enhancing Indigenous partnerships and reconciliation, and supporting employment and local businesses in the Estevan area.

Our Progress So Far

Construction will begin in spring 2026 and be complete within a year.

To prepare for construction, no seedlings have been planted yet. This means our annual seedling distribution program is paused for the coming year. It’ll resume in spring 2028.

Project Benefits

Shand Greenhouse provides seedlings at no charge each year to landowners, non-profit organizations, municipalities and Indigenous communities across Saskatchewan.

Once upgrades are complete, we hope to increase seedlings production from approximately 550,000 seedlings per year to as much as 700,000.
