We’ve partnered with Awasis Solar and First Nations Power Authority to bring 10 megawatts (MWs) of solar power to our grid. The facility will be located near Regina. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.
Why We’re Doing It
Our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% from our 2005 levels by 2030. Part of reaching this goal is to add more renewable energy sources, like solar power. In coming years, we’re on track to add 60 MW of solar power to the grid.
First Nations Power Authority is a not-for-profit organization that works to include First Nations in the power sector in Saskatchewan as a means for sustainable economic development and community benefits. In May 2019, we signed a Solar Power First Nations Opportunity Agreement with them. This agreement sets out a process and terms for developing 20 MW of new solar power projects.
How We Will Build It
Awasis Solar is a partnership between Cowessess First Nation and Elemental Energy. They’ll build, own and manage the project while selling us the power produced.
