BD3 Status Update: Q1 2025
May 02, 2025

During the first quarter of 2025 (January 1 – March 31), the carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at Boundary Dam Power Station was available 98.4% of the time, capturing 226,359 tonnes of CO2. While online, the facility had a daily average capture rate of 2,553 tonnes in Q4, with a peak one-day capture of 2,749 tonnes. This resulted in an emissions intensity of 376 tonnes of carbon dioxide per gigawatt hour. March 31, 2025 also marks the end of the third consecutive fiscal year that CCS achieved more than 800,000 tonnes of CO2 captured, with a total of 834,232 tonnes captured in 2024-25.
As of mid-April, CCS and BD3 are in a planned maintenance overhaul that is expected to last until early July. Planned work includes a major packing change of both the absorber towers and the SO2 stripper vessel along with inspection and maintenance of the CO2 compressor.
