It’s been a busy summer at SaskPower. Fortunately, a group of talented summer students have joined us for the season, getting the opportunity to learn on the job and discover what a career at SaskPower is all about.

There are several summer student positions available each year:

Post Secondary Summer Students

Post secondary summer students have already graduated from high school and are continuing their education. SaskPower received 951 applications from students across the province. Out of those, 75 students were chosen to work in positions related to administration, engineering, and labourer roles.

Throughout the program, these students will be involved in various activities like company-wide orientation sessions, formal check-ins and end-of-term surveys.

High School Summer Students

SaskPower also welcomes students who are still in high school but want to get some work experience over the summer. SaskPower received 295 applications from high school students eager to join the team, with 26 hired within Operations and Generation.

We’ve also partnered with the Regina and Saskatoon District Industry Council to offer the Saskatchewan Youth Internship Program. This program allows students the opportunity to earn high school apprenticeship credits while working.

Power Engineering Summer Students (Post Secondary)

This program is intended to attract high-performing talent to the Facilities and Process Operator areas, which are in high demand. The objectives are to mentor and support the students, monitor their performance and provide them with a preview of SaskPower, all with the hope of encouraging them to choose SaskPower as their employer of choice after graduation.

This year, 31 students were hired from 70 summer applications to work across the province in facilities including Boundary Dam, Shand, Poplar River, Chinook and Queen Elizabeth power stations.

Co-op Summer Students (Post Secondary)

The Co-op Summer Student program provides potential future SaskPower employees with practical work experience related to their educational background. Not only do they get a sneak peek of what SaskPower is like as an employer, they also gain an understanding of how a work environment operates, whether that’s in the field, office, plant, or lab.

This year, 25 students were hired from 677 applications. They’re working primarily in Regina, Saskatoon and Estevan.

What the Students Have to Say

Angelica Ong, Generation Project Delivery (studying mechanical engineering at the University of Saskatchewan)

SaskPower powers my home, and now, it powers my purpose. It’s incredible to see how the decisions we make and the plans we draft on paper come to life on-site. Through my time at SaskPower, I’ve learned the value of clear communication, the importance of building strong networks across Saskatchewan, and how to apply practical engineering knowledge to real-world project decisions.

Sara Rezaeinavaei, Station Assets (pursuing a Master of Science in industrial systems engineering at the University of Regina)

As an industrial engineering student, many of the tasks involve electrical concepts that are new to me. However, my coworkers have gone out of their way to explain every detail clearly, helping me bridge the gap between my academic background and the technical requirements of the role. This combination of hands-on learning, supportive mentorship, and a collaborative team environment has made my experience both enjoyable and enriching.

Obinna Okoli, Transmission Engineering Protection and Control (studying energy systems engineering at the University of Regina)

I chose SaskPower because I wanted hands-on experience in the energy sector and to be part of a team driving Saskatchewan’s power systems forward.

Samuel Yama, Logistics (studying power engineering at Saskatchewan Polytechnic)

I chose SaskPower due to having a strong reputation for excellence, commitment to safety and consistent growth over the years in the power industry. I’m learning how to execute inventory management, warehousing, order processing and packaging. Meanwhile, I have enjoyed teamwork and a commitment to safety.

SaskPower is committed to nurturing the next generation of talent. These programs are part of our broader strategy to work with educational institutions, provide meaningful work experience, and ensure that students are well-prepared for future careers at SaskPower.
