K+S Potash Canada (K+S) is expanding a combined heat and power (CHP) facility it operates near its Bethune potash mine.

The facility will produce heat for the company’s mining operation and electricity for SaskPower. We’ve signed an agreement to purchase up to 62 megawatts (MW) of gas-generated power from K+S starting in late 2026 through the end of 2034.

Why Combined Heat and Power?

The CHP facility will produce electricity for SaskPower as well as heat and steam for K+S’s mining operations.

We continue to modernize our power system with diverse supply options. We’re making these investments to ensure our customers have reliable and affordable power, and to support our growing province.

Progress So Far

The expanded facility is currently under construction and will consist of three natural gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators.

Visit the K+S website to learn more about this project.

Respecting the Local Environment

K+S is responsible to engage with the Ministry of Environment and other regulatory agencies to ensure all environmental requirements are being met.

Project Benefits

This agreement allows us to purchase reliable, baseload power generated by K+S as it expands its potash refining process. It will also provide additional resilience to our power grid.
